How to “Fix” Being Highly Sensitive
I got this question a lot this week. People identified with the symptoms, they felt the pain, they were frustrated, and they wanted to know… how do I fix it? Is there a pill I can take? How do I get better?
You may not like this answer, but you can’t. You can’t “fix” being highly sensitive because there’s nothing “wrong” with you. Was that triggering? I know the feeling. I’m not saying your symptoms and struggles aren’t valid. They 100% are. Everything you’ve struggled with, every time you’ve been shamed or bullied, every time you’ve thought you were broken or weird, it’s 100% valid.
But being highly sensitive is how you’re made. There’s no getting rid of it, but you CAN find peace, joy, health, and learn to thrive. How do I know? Because I did it.
I have a three step approach to thriving as a highly sensitive person.
Understand yourself DEEPLY. Learn how your system works. What makes you different. Why you react the way you do. How this has affected your life. Learn as much as you can about your sensitivity and what that means for you. Why? So that you can remove the mystery and start seeing yourself for who you really are.
Start changing your mindset. Easier said than done, right? Yes. But it all starts with compassion. Healing your inner child. Reframing your life experiences now that you know you’re highly sensitive. You can’t “think” your way out of this one. Changing your mindset is actually changing your entire way of thinking, being, and holding yourself. Don’t worry — it’s not as hard as it sounds, and you’ll LOVE how much better you feel on the other side.
Develop tools to cope with the world. The world isn’t going to stop being loud, overwhelming, intense, and judgemental. But YOU can change how you process it and how you manage it so that you can do more, feel better, and follow your dreams. Simple tools like nervous system regulation, somatic release, NDR (notice, disrupt, and redirect your thoughts) have done WONDERS for me. Healing doesn’t have to be suuuuper complicated. Can it be? Of course. But the way you start out can be so simple that it seems insane you didn’t start earlier. Insane that nobody told you these things.
I spent most of my life (literally 20 years) thinking I was broken and damaged. I don’t want anyone else to feel that way. It’s awful, it’s not fair, and it’s unnecessary. You are a gorgeous, beautiful, complex, valuable human being. You deserve to stop surviving and start thriving.
